Neighbourhood Planning group

Residents in Soho and Handsworth have made an application to Birmingham City Council (BCC) to consider the designation of a Neighbourhood Planning Forum and Neighbourhood Plan area boundary

Shuranjeet Singh (right) is based in Handsworth, Birmingham. He has been working with local residents, communities and stakeholders to develop a Neighbourhood Planning Forum in the Soho and Handsworth area.

Outside of Neighbourhood Planning, Shuranjeet does mental health research, is a PhD student and is supporting his local community on other initiatives around education, healthcare and housing.

Shuranjeet is motivated to undertake Neighbourhood Planning in his area to ensure local voices are placed at the centre of future developments.

Shuranjeet and other local residents have made an application to BCC to consider the designation of a Neighbourhood Planning Forum and Neighbourhood Plan area boundary for Soho and Handsworth. This is running until Friday 4 October 2024. You can see their applications, and find out how to give feedback, on the BCC website.

The group members are sharing their updates and gathering interested people via social media and in-person events, both inside and outside of public buildings. They share useful links via their Local Voices in Community Development website.

Below are two examples of Soho and Handsworth Neighbourhood Planning Forum’s consultation flyers. They created them using canva.com, which is free design software that community groups with low or no budget often find very useful.

The group has held consultations at different venues and different times of day, to ensure different people are able to attend. The image on the right is from a consultation outside Handsworth Library.

To find out more about the Soho and Handsworth Neighbourhood Planning group as it develops, get in touch with Birmingham City Council’s Neighbourhood Development and Support Unit, who will connect you.

I'm always trying to think about ways of encouraging further and broader participation.”
